Employers Honoured at the 11th Annual Smart Commute Awards
Smart Commute’s sustainable transportation leaders from across the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area gathered at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Thursday, November 23, 2017 for the 11th Annual Smart Commute Awards. Smart Commute workplaces were recognized for their outstanding efforts and success in implementing the Smart Commute program and encouraging employees to explore alternative commuting options.
The Smart Commute Employer of the Year Award – Peel Region is presented to the top employer in the Region of Peel, implementing Smart Commute programs. Winners are selected for their achievement in the areas of commitment, leadership, innovation and results.
The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) manages, operates and maintains Toronto Pearson – Canada’s largest and busiest airport. The GTAA set an ambitious target to increase the number of employees commuting by transit to 30% by 2035 as part of its Pearson Mobility Hub planning efforts.
Beginning April 1, 2017, the GTAA worked with SCPAA to launch an employee Green Commuter Rebate Program. Employees who register for the program and walk, cycle, carpool or take public transit to/from work 70% of the time in any given month as well as track their behaviour on the Smart Commute Tool, qualify for a taxable rebate of $50.00 per month. The program has seen 178 participants to-date resulting in a reduction of 321,166.51 km of vehicular kilometres traveled and 41,754.83 kg of GHG’s.
“At Toronto Pearson, we strongly believe in our responsibility to help make the surrounding community one that’s healthy and sustainable. That’s why we are proud to support and partner with Smart Commute. As one of the Greater Toronto region’s largest employers, our employees want solutions to gridlock that will improve their quality of life by reducing commute times and transportation costs – and that’s what Smart Commute is helping to do. Plus, by taking cars off the road, we are helping to ease congestion around our sites and improve the quality of the air we breathe.”
