The Most Unlikely Cyclist Weeks 3, 4, 5

Week 3 was very rainy.  So rainy I did not manage to commute to work once.  Or at least I think it was rainy.  Maybe it was actually just really busy at work with fancy meetings where I couldn’t afford to start my day dodging traffic and getting sweaty.MULC #3 pic1Anyway, I did ride my bike once in Week 3.  I rode a little 5k loop around my neighbourhood, followed by a little 3k run.  Now, you might be asking yourself, why in heaven’s name would she be doing something like that? Well, let me tell you why.

Because I am insane.  Wait, no, that’s not right.  Because I am going to attempt a very short triathlon at the end of the summer!  There is a little event called “Give-it-a-Tri” on Toronto Island at the end of August.  It is a 400m open water swim, 10k bike ride, 2.5k run triathlon.  Since the City of Vaughan and SmartCommute bought me a bike, I am going to take my bike over to the island on the ferry and give it a try!

Since I have a bike, and I have two legs, I thought it would be a useful thing to see what it was like to ride then run.  I have heard this called a “brick” – apparently so named because when you get off a bike and start running, your legs feel like bricks.  Having done this once, I can attest to the utter truth of this.  It’s weird because even though I was running at close to my race pace (so, pretty fast, for me anyway), I felt like I was going soooooo slowly.  Mainly because even running at race pace, I cannot run nearly as fast as I can bike!  But I did it, and it wasn’t terrible, and it makes think that I might be okay with a triathlon, as long as I don’t drown!

Week 4.  Well, Week 4, you were a good week both personally and professionally.  But you were a terrible week for the bike.  Let’s just leave it at that.

And that brings us to Week 5!  Week 5 was better than Week 4, but not as good as Week 2.  Please, someone, tell me that it is going to not rain all summer long!  Of course, now that school is out, and dancing is done for the summer, and taekwondo, and we get a bit of a break, I might be able to shoehorn a few more rides per week in.  Can’t wait for Week 6!
