Smart Commute Month 2019

Smart Commute Month is here, and we want to hear how you get around Durham Region!  Driver, cyclist, GO Train rider – however you get to work, we want to know about it. We’ve made it SUPER easy, you just have to click on this link and take our short survey.

At Smart Commute, our goal is to provide you with better, greener options for getting to work. The more we know about how people are moving around in Durham, the more effective our commute options can be. Looking for better transit? Need a better incentive to try carpooling? It all starts HERE.

So, take five minutes out of your day, and click here to take the survey. As a thank you for taking part, we’ll enter you into a draw to win one of five great prizes! Winners will have the choice between a $100 gas card, $100 CycleLife gift card, or $100 PRESTO card.

Rethink Your Commute

Beyond the survey, Smart Commute Month is all about rethinking how you get to and from work. Have you been considering biking to work, or trying transit? September is the perfect time to give a new mode a try!

Looking to share the ride to work with someone? Carpooling allows you to reduce both your commuting costs and the number of vehicles on the road. Whether you’re looking for a carpool buddy to chat with, or you’re more interested in catching some shut-eye on the ride to work, carpooling could be right for you!

Find people in your area with similar commutes using the Smart Commute Tool. The Tool makes it easy to locate potential carpool buddies and connect with them. Depending on where you work, your employer may also offer incentives for carpooling, such as reserved parking spots or discounted parking rates. All the more reason to share the ride!

Your trip on transit is easier than you think! Use Triplinx to plan your trip and discover transit options in your area. Taking transit can save you money, help reduce congestion on the roads and gives you time to nap or catch up on your reading – the choice is yours!

Biking to work is a great way to get some exercise while also reducing your carbon footprint. Can’t cycle the whole trip? No problem! Try combining bikes and transit! All GO Transit and Durham Region Transit buses are equipped with bike racks and most GO stations have bike shelters on site. Depending on what time you’re travelling, you can also take your bike on the GO Train. Discover the facilities at your stop and learn more about cycling to GO.

If you live near your workplace, why not give walking to work a try? If you live too far to walk the whole way, consider combining walking with another mode for a sustainable, active commute. Walk to the train station or your carpool pick-up spot, or park somewhere on the way to work and then walk the rest of the way! Walking to work, whether it’s the full trip or just part of it, helps fight climate change, boosts your mental health and gives you a chance to get some fresh air before the workday. Plan out your route using Google Maps or Triplinx.

P.S. Hey, drivers: this is for you too! We want to get a full picture of how people are getting around, so if you’re a driver, it’s ok, you can tell us.
