For Employers

Improve your triple bottom line with Smart Commute

Traffic congestion in the GTHA negatively affects your business, your employees’ quality of life and the environment. Let’s design a Smart Commute program that saves your business and your employees time, money and tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

More than 340 employers in the GTHA are already Smart Commute workplaces. In a 2009 survey of Smart Commute employers, 93% said they would recommend the services offered by Smart Commute to other companies and 88% rate Smart Commute programs as ‘Extremely important’, ‘Very important’ or ‘Important’ to their organization.

Meet Hatch, the University Health Network and York Region and see how they improved their triple bottom line with Smart Commute. For a list of all participating employers, please click here.

Case Study: WorleyParsons Canada

Carpooling is part of the corporate culture at WorleyParsons

For close to half of the employees at WorleyParsons’ Mississauga location, sharing the commute to work is just one example of a broader concept that addresses the corporate goal of reducing impacts on the environment. The company’s EcoNomics™ program fosters internal endeavours like the membership in the Smart Commute program, and in November 2010, the company was recognized as the Smart Commute Pearson Airport Area Employer of the Year for its efforts.

Active participation in many events, such as the EcoDriver Workshop, Car Free Day, carpool promotions, Smart Commute Week and a year-round Rewards program has maintained staff enthusiasm and engagement at WorleyParsons. While the success of these events is largely due to the interest of the employees, office initiatives implemented by management to facilitate sustainable transportation modes have also played a key role. These include:

  • Flexible work hours, including telework;
  • Dedicated and secure bicycle parking area;
  • On-site shower facilities; and
  • Company-sponsored access to a local gym which provides cyclists/pedestrians with an appropriate place to stretch and cool down, as well as shower facilities.

WorleyParsons is an active member of the GTAA Partners in Project Green and the City of Mississauga’s LitterNot program, and participates annually in the Carbon Disclosure Project. Commitment to these programs help to further reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions and makes commuting safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists.
