Round Up of our Bike Month Events
The Active Transportation Expo took place at the Markham Civic Centre on June 9, 2017! The event was hosted by Smart Commute Markham, Richmond Hill and the City of Markham.
Over 60 participants, including employees from the City of Markham, Smart Commute MRH workplaces, representatives from York Region, Markham’s Cycling and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (CPAC) and members of the community, enjoyed a day of active transportation activities, great vendors and prizes from our partners and sponsors. Participants experienced a hands-on cycling skills workshop, a cycling tour of the Highway 7 bike lanes and a bus tour of Downtown Markham. Brian Lee, Director of Engineering at the City of Markham, expressed his gratitude for those who celebrate and promote active commuting within Markham in his opening speech. Speaking on behalf of Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Regional Councillor Nirmala Armstrong was joined by Councillor Alan Ho, who showed their support for the City of Markham and York Region’s commitment to active transportation infrastructure in the city.

Bike Month Lunch & Learn with Metrolinx Chief Planning Officer Leslie Woo
The future is green for sustainable commuting in York Region! Leslie Woo, Metrolinx’s Chief Planning Officer, addressed City of Markham employees, on June 23, 2017, about the future of sustainable commuting. With over $36 billion in committed projects, Ms. Woo discussed the future infrastructure projects that will connect the Region, such as GO Rail transformation, GO expansion, faster and more frequent services, Eglinton Crosstown, Hamilton and Hurontario LRTs, bus rapid transit in Newmarket and the Smart Commute program.
