Events

Here’s a list of events happening around the GTHA this school year to promote active school travel.

  • International Walk to School Month

October is International Walk to School Month! Participate for a Day (Wednesday Oct. 4, 2017), a Week (Oct. 2-6, 2017)…or all month long! International Walk to School Month (IWALK) is an annual global event of the Active & Safe Routes to School program, taking place each October. Learn what the Town of Ajax and Hamilton region are doing.

  • Winter Walk Day

It’s winter! Don’t hibernate – bundle up, walk to school, and celebrate! Walk on Winter Walk Day, February 1, 2017, or any day in February! Walk to school or at school for daily physical activity, a healthier environment, safer streets, making friends and … having fun!

Can’t walk to school? Hold a Winter Walk Day during school, walk to the local skating rink for a skate or hold a Winter carnival in the school yard at lunch. More ideas here.

  • Spring Into Spring

As spring arrives schools can challenge their students to walk (jog, skip or bike) as often as possible between Earth Week and Clean Air Day. Spring is a great time to promote daily physical activity, a healthier environment, safer streets, making friends and having fun!

  • Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual worldwide event celebrated on April 22 and a great time to participate in active and sustainable travel! EcoKids offers free educational resources for Canadian teachers, students, parents and communities to engage in environmental action.

  • Road Safety Week

National Road Safety week is an annual awareness campaign held in May that encourages having preventative measures in place for children to limit risk of injury. Topics include information on helmet safety, traffic safety, school bus safety and much more.

  • Bike to School Week

Bike to School Week is an annual campaign created and promoted through a partnership between Metrolinx, CultureLink and many stakeholders across the GTHA. Its purpose is to focus attention on cycling as a potential travel mode by encouraging schools, parents and children to get involved in fun, safe and engaging programs.

Bike week 2016 is May 30 to June 3. To find out how you can get involved visit biketoschoolweek.ca.
