Cogeco Cable Canada gets Games ready
With the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games right around the corner, one Burlington company is already well prepared with strategies to ensure that their business is not adversely affected.
Cogeco Cable Canada, a telecommunications company that specializes in telephone, internet and cable television, is based in Montreal and has a large regional office in Burlington. With the Games on the horizon, the company started thinking last fall about how they could do business a little bit differently. A Smart Commute Halton member, the company started working on a multi-pronged approach to ensure continuity of operations while at the same time getting into the Games spirit with the rest of the community:
“Cogeco’s readiness for the Games is obviously essential from an operations perspective. But it’s also an opportunity to say, hey, maybe there is a different way of doing this. By doing due diligence we are contributing to the community and reducing our carbon footprint,” says Shawn Cowley, Manager, Business Continuity and Development and Chair of Sustainability Cogeco, the company’s green team.
The company isn’t just relying on one approach to get Games ready – they have a suite of strategies ready to tackle the challenge head on and help reduce traffic congestion. Employees will be encouraged to use public transit during the Games period – and the company will be implementing a free shuttle service for employees between the Appleby GO station and the office on Syscon Road. Cogeco Cable Canadawill also be promoting their carpool program (which has been in place for 4+ years) and working with Smart Commute Halton to help employees find carpool matches using Smart Commute’s online tool. Employees that carpool get access to designated carpool parking conveniently located adjacent to the main entrance.
During the Games period, Cogeco Cable Canada will also be encouraging both flexible work hours and remote working (also known as teleworking). “All of our employees who are not customer facing have the ability to work remotely,” says Shawn. “From Google Hangouts to conference bridges to how to access your e-mail remotely, Cogeco provides the tools and resources that employees need to successfully work out of the office.” By advocating for flex hours, the company will allow employees to travel during off-peak hours which helps reduce traffic congestion. Rather than a typical 9-5 work day, for example, employees can consider working 7-3 or 10-6, at their manager’s discretion.
The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games offer a great opportunity for area residents to enjoy the events and see world class athletes perform, but it is also an opportunity for businesses to develop strategies to cope with any disruption, making them more resilient in the future.
